Pauli Kervinen palasi Yhdysvalloista Suomeen suorittaakseen varusmiespalveluksensa. Neljän ulkomailla vietetyn vuoden jälkeen sopeutuminen inttiarkeen oli kuitenkin helppoa ja palvelustehtävät valokuvaajana ovat olleet mielenkiintoisia.

"Intin alku oli vähän outoa aikaa, sillä olin muuttanut neljä vuotta aikaisemmin Suomesta Coloradoon, Yhdysvaltoihin, opiskelemaan paikalliseen yliopistoon strategista viestintää. Opiskelujen jälkeen olin hetken mainostoimistolla töissä ja tein freelance-töitä ennen kuin palvelus alkoi. Nyt minulla on uskoakseni hyvät yhteydet eri paikkoihin ja aionkin palata töihin mainostoimistoon tai freelanceriksi palveluksen jälkeen. Se on nyt ajatukseni siitä, mitä tulevaisuudessa teen.

Alussa tuli vähän lukioajat mieleen, kun palasin Suomeen, mutta kyllä se arki on intissä lähtenyt rullaamaan. Suomeen muuttaminen kävi siis helposti, se oli vain paluu vanhaan arkeen.

Yhdysvalloissa on myös eräänlaiset kutsunnat, mutta se on vain lappu, johon pitää vastata, haluaako palvella vai ei. Kun laittaa raksin ruutuun "ei", niin se on siinä. Mietin kyllä vähän aikaa, haluanko palvella Yhdysvalloissa vai Suomessa.

Palvelus on tarjonnut aika monta erilaista kokemusta, sillä valokuvaajana Maanpuolustuskorkeakoululla on päässyt näkemään asioita laidasta laitaan.

Tämä viikko on varmaan se jännittävin viikko palveluksen aikana, koska pääsen harjoituksessa helikopterin kyytiin ja loppuviikosta kuvaan kadetteja sekä presidentti Sauli Niinistöä. Kadettien valmistujaiset tulee olemaan iso tapahtuma, kun he marssivat Presidentinlinnalle.

Tehtävässäni parasta on, että pääsen näkemään intin eri tavalla kuin muut. On ollut hauska nähdä puolustusvoimat sisältäpäin. Meidän esimiehemme ovat pääsääntöisesti korkeampiarvoisempia verrattuna monien muiden varusmiesten esimiehiin. Se tarkoittaa, että näemme asioita aitiopaikalta ja koemme asioita, joita emme muuten pääsisi kokemaan.

Alunperin tulin ajatuksella, että palvelen kuusi kuukautta. Tiesin jo ennen palvelusta, että on olemassa erityistehtäviä, kuten graafikon tehtävät, mutta vasta intissä selvisi, että palvelusaika on yhdeksän kuukautta. Siinä vaiheessa se vähän pidempi palvelus ei kuitenkaan haitannut, kun oli kyse "hyvistä hommista". Ei se kolme kuukautta pidempi palvelus haittaa, kun saan työtodistuksen, että olen saanut seitsemän kuukautta työkokemusta oman alan tehtävistä. Ylipäätänsä tämä on hyvä tapa palvella ja saada irti asioita palveluksesta. Vastaava paikka olisi yleensä vaikea saada harjoittelijana ja vaatisi paljon kokemusta.

Aikaisemmin olen tehnyt tuotekuvauksia, esimerkiksi eräälle suomalaiselle lonkero-firmalle Yhdysvalloissa. Valokuvausta olen tehnyt myös harrastuksena.
Aluksi hain erityistehtäviin graafikoksi, mutta esimies päätti laittaa minut valokuvaajaksi, mikä on ollut loppupeleissä erinomainen asia, koska olen saanut siitä todella paljon irti ja oppinut lisää kameran käytöstä. Tosi hyvä kokemus kokonaisuudessaan, vaikka juuri graafikon tehtäviä en ole lopulta tehnyt. Ehkä parempi niin!

Omalla tavallaan intin arki yllätti. Hetken aikaa kesti sopeutua, mutta nyt kun palaa lomilta, niin tiedän jo kaikki kuviot ja se ei enää yllätä. Helposti intin arkeen pääsee kiinni.

Maanpuolustuskorkeakoululla meillä on tosi hyvät piirit ja tuvan kesken tullaan hyvin toimeen. Niinhän sitä aina sanotaan, että intissä on hyvät piirit ja voin itsekin sanoa, että se pitää paikkansa."

 

From Colorado to the daily routes of military service

Private 1st Class Pauli Kervinen returned from the United States to Finland to perform his military service earlier this year in January. After four years abroad, adjusting to life in the military was easy and serving in the military as a photographer has provided many eye-opening experiences.

“The beginning of the military was a bit strange, as I had moved four years earlier from Finland to Colorado to study strategic communications at the University of Colorado, Boulder. After graduating, I worked at an advertising agency and did some freelance work on the side. When I return to Colorado after my service, I plan to continue in an agency or working as a freelancer.

At the start, returning to Finland reminded me of being back in high school. Then everyday life started rolling in the military. Moving to Finland was easy, it was just a return to my old daily routines.

The United States military also requires all males to register for selective service. You just need to answer a yes or no question. I had always contemplated whether I wanted to serve in the US or Finland.

My conscription service in the Finnish Defence Forces has provided numerous unforgettable experiences. As the photographer at the National Defence University, I have been able to experience the military from many diverse perspectives.

This week is probably the most exciting week of my service. On Wednesday, I'll be flown in a helicopter as a part of a United Nations exercise. And at the end of the week, I'll be filming and photographing the cadets as they graduate in front of Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö at the President’s Palace.

The best part of my job is to see the military differently than many others. It’s been fun to see the Defence Forces from the inside. Our superiors are generally higher ranked than those which conscripts normally have. This means I have a chance to see the operations from a higher level and get to participate in experiences that would not otherwise be possible.

Originally, before stepping into the military, I had the plan of serving for only six months. I knew before entering the service that there was a special task force, such as the job of a graphic designer, but not much more. It wasn't until I started that I learned all these special jobs require service for nine months. At that point, the longer service time didn't bother me, since I had the opportunity to have what we call a “good job.” It was three months longer, and I’ll get a work certificate to show I have used these seven months working and gaining experience in my own specific field. Overall, this is a great way to serve my country and gain unique experience, which would otherwise be difficult for someone at the start of their career to get.

In the past, I've worked with product photography, for example, for a long drink company, which is currently expanding in the United States. Photography is also my hobby, which I’m very passionate about.

At first, I applied to the militaries Special Tasks Forces as a graphic designer. However, my supervisor saw more potential in me as a photographer, which has been great at the end of the day. I've gotten so much out of this experience and learned how to fully put a camera to use. It’s been a really good experience overall – even though I haven't done much graphic work. Perhaps better this way!

In a way, everyday life in the military surprised me. It took a while to adjust, but now that I've been here for 8 months, I know the expectations, so there are no new surprises. It’s quite easy to get used to the everyday routine.

We have a really good working atmosphere at the National Defence University, and everyone gets along very well in our Special Task group. As the saying goes, you meet some of the most interesting people in the military. And I can say for myself that this is absolutely true."
